Graveyard Girls July 08 news update
Wow there's a lot going on. We've been away from publishing
over the last few weekends, and I'm sure a lot of you who follow the site
have been wondering why.
First up, we displayed at 2 art shows in 2 cities a week
apart. The response since Nocturnal Frequencies and Summer Bloodfeast
has turned out to be well worth the investment I made to represent the
site over those 2 weekends.
Next up was video production for Queerview.com. This is
something that has been mostly absent on Graveyard Girls until recent
months, but yes I also do video production. This last weekend was spent
covering Queer View's contribution to Charlotte NC's Pride events over
a 2 day stretch. If you're in the Charlotte area, look for this footage
to air on Cable Access 21 starting Saturday night at 11pm, and covering
a 3 week span.
Next up... camera upgrades and product testing. I just
purchased our first 1080i hi def camcorder, and have spent some time testing
out the unit since Sunday. By the end of 2008 our current mini dv array
will be retired and replaced.
This new capability will not only aid in production arrangements
with singlecell.us and Queerview.com, but also opens new merchandise opportunities
for Graveyard Girls.
For those of you in my local area, we will be holding
a public meeting during the month of September to discuss some of these
options, as well as a few other ideas I am tossing around. I am asking
ALL of our girls within a 1 hour radius of Greenville SC to attend, as
this is of high importance.
The meeting will fall on a Sunday morning in September,
but I do not want to lock a date just yet. If any of you know of a Sunday
you absolutely can not attend, please let me know as soon as possible.
Finally, tshirts are still available. If you're wanting
one, hit up the shopping section at graveyardgirls.net
Thanks to all of you for your continued support.

6am After Summer Bloodfeast IV
I have got to say first off, thank you to all who attended.
If you went to see the new Batman instead, beat yourself now. Any of you
reading this that didn't come tonight missed the best quality art show
I have ever booked. 7 bands, and incredible work on display all over the
place. This one will probably never be matched.
I've been saying a lot over the last 6 months about dedication.
Graveyard Girls is about to surpass all previous incarnations of the site,
and I am paying close attention to who is interested. There is so much
going on behind the scenes right now that none of you really know about,
but when the ball does drop, a lot are going to be left behind.
The Summer Bloodfeast event series has always been a celebration
of Graveyard Girls. Aside from the celebration end, it is also somewhat
of a test. This year I am walking away suffering a little from shock.
I need dedicated people to work with. There were so many
absent faces tonight. Some I know just absolutely couldn't make it. Most
however I think just didn't care. This is a major part of why I am more
focused on shooting out of town, away from home. My opinion on this matter
is also the same regarding most of the Greenville / Spartanburg SC area
bands and artists.
6 years into the Graveyard Girls photos, and 4 years into
the Summer Bloodfeast events, I have never felt so abandoned by the scene
that honestly should support this type of stuff. Traffic from out of town
quite literally saved me from losing everything tonight.
I still lost in excess of a thousand dollars. It's ok.
I have a good job. I will recover from it in a matter of days. All of
my stuff will continue. There will be more art shows. There will be more
photo shoots. Most of my home market individuals will not be included,
and it will take more than an e-mail to convince me to listen. Sorry to
offend.. I already have a few dedicated individuals in surrounding cities.
I've decided that I don't even need most of you.
This was, despite a poor turnout, the best show I have
ever booked. Future shows are going to see a slight change to prevent
financial losses. Some of you will not like those changes. I don't really
care. Most who will complain are those who didn't show up tonight. Again,
I can rely more on the out of towners...
I know who is paying attention, and who gives a shit about
this group effort.
To all the bands and entertainment, you all kicked ass.
Mick and all of my Ground Zero brothers and sisters, thank you for making
this show even possible. No other club anywhere cares as much as you guys.
We are looking to October and November for our next 2
major art show events. As things develop, I will be posting information
here at Graveyard Girls. If you're paying enough attention to this
post to respond, I hope you're still paying enough attention to show up.

Summer Bloodfeast IV in just a few days!
summerbloodfeast.com

Finally, the time has come for our 4th annual Summer Bloodfeast.
Originally intended as a one-off art show, this thing, with the help of
a few friends, has grown into quite the little monster. We are now officially
in partnership with Charlotte NC's Single
Cell Productions with the Summer Bloodfeast namesake, so there's no
telling how far this thing can go.
We will be taking a small break from publication here
at Graveyard Girls this week to focus on the final tasks at hand before
friday gets here. Look for new stuff to go up next week, as we do still
have plenty left to drag from the crypt.
& most importantly of all, WE HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL
FRIDAY NIGHT IN SPARTANBURG SC!

Legal or no? Are graveyards private property?
(I should have originally titled this 'civil rights
violated on the 4th of July weekend'.)
I have had this issue arrise more times than I care to
count. Why is it every time someone objects to me shooting pics, vandalism
is mentioned as part of their complaint? I have been wondering for 6 years
how I am supposed to dig up a grave with a camera. I'm sure it could be
done if I really wanted to, but not very fast.
The fact is it is just fine in most cemeteries to walk
your dog, and to do grave rubbings. Both of these actions can potentially
do much more damage to a stone than my camera. I saw a dog urinate today
on a marker stone, and I do know of old stones getting cracked by doing
marker rubbings.
The guy that confronted me this morning was very rude.
I guess he thinks his own moral values can be forced on anyone. The fact
is, unless the cemetery is surrounded by private property, or has signs
posted saying no entry, it is public domain during daylight hours. If
it is to be closed to photographers, stone rubbing and walking of pets
also must be prohibited.
I am sure I am not the first to be hassled on a location
like this. Be sure to stand your ground.
From Wikipedia: "The synonymous term freedom of expression
is sometimes preferred, since the right is not confined to verbal speech
but is understood to protect any act of seeking, receiving and imparting
information or ideas, regardless of the medium used." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_speech
Since most of us here are in the USA... If you allow yourself
to be dismissed from a location that is public domain, provided you are
not breaking any other local or federal laws, you are allowing your rights
according to the First Amendment to the United States Constitution to
be violated. They are the criminals. Not you.
Stand up for yourself.

Nocturnal Frequencies 1 week away! Summer Bloodfeast
IV in 2 weeks!
It has been nearly 3 years since we have done a display
featuring Graveyard Girls, and over the next 2 weeks, we have 2 great
showings headed your way!
First up is Single
Cell's Nocturnal Frequencies in Charlotte NC. (CLICK
HERE FOR TICKETS)
Single
Cell and the Purgatory Road Show have been supporters of what we do
for a long time, and courtesy of a recent partnership between Graveyard
Girls and Single Cell,
we are dragging some prints out of the crypt for public display.

Next up on the roster is our own Summer Bloodfeast IV
in Spartanburg SC. (summerbloodfeast.com)
Again we will be displaying, and we expect many Graveyard
Girls going all the way back to the original 2002 series to be there.
Lots of great entertainment on the bill this year, with lots of great
drinks and people. We hope to see you all there.

Lastly, happy 4th of July everyone. If you happen to have
an accident with fireworks, save the limbs for us!

Site updates
If you've missed it (a lot have) there are 2 new tabs
in the top menu navigation. "Calendar" and "Modeling"
were added about a week ago to make things here a little easier.
-
Calendar, obviously, is a list of dates and places we
will be representing Graveyard Girls, as well as a list of events I (Shane)
am working or helping out with. A LOT of dates currently on there are
coming up extremely fast.
-
Modeling is a slight revision on the old FAQ section,
as well as submission guidelines for potential models. You can also download
our release there before shooting with us so you will have a chance to
review it.
-
On the multimedia end... Planning is now underway to expand
our video capabilities to high definition. The current mini dv camcorders
used for our interview sessions will be retired and replaced by the end
of the year for a new 3-4 cam hi def array in full 1080i.
The new capabilities will also expand into production
arrangements with queerviewshow.com as well as singlecell.us.
Testing with the new cameras may begin as soon as August
2008.
-
"To Die Is Gain" Graveyard Girls T-shirts ARE
still available, and will be on hand at Nocturnal Frequencies in Charlotte
NC on July 12. Some sizes are nearly GONE, and may very well sell out
at this event. Whatever is left will be on hand at Summer Bloodfeast IV
the following week in Spartanburg.
If you want one and have not placed an order yet, I HIGHLY
suggest getting one quick. No more standard t-shirts are planned for this
year, and these specific t-shirts are never going to be reproduced.
-
Lastly, I would like to say RIP George Carlin. I just
heard about his passing yesterday. In my opinion, we have lost one of
the funniest people on the planet. Thanks for all the laughs George.

T-shirt update
Less than 1 week left before the new shirts are due in
from the printer! Here's a peek at the proofs that were sent to us.

I know many of you missed the preorder offer. The last
chance to get these without the inflated cost to cover shipping will be
RIGHT AFTER I get them in my hands, and you will have to catch me in person.
Amazingly enough, XL is already running a bit on short supply.
If you want to guarantee the size you need, visit the
ordering page HERE
If you DID manage to order online during the preorder,
yours should be mailed by the end of next week. Expect these shirts to
begin arriving in the mail during the first week of June.

An update on the future of this site...
Thanks to all of you who have commented to me on myspace and those that have called about the site closing. It's good to see that some of you care about it that much.
I have reopened things for now, but it is only temporary. The site will be going thru a massive change over the next few weeks.
If we are to keep this thing going, some things are going to have to change. Much of this will rely on me finding time to shoot, but it is also up to the girls to be dependable. Some of you have asked what is going on... so I guess I will take a moment to explain.
For the last year and a half I have been working for a company that was consuming much of my time to shoot, and for the last 6 months my hours have been absolutely impossible to work around. Because of this, I opened the site up to outside photographers to be able to submit work. I somehow managed to find the time to shoot a few sets this year, but after over 40 sets that I know were shot, I only have 5 in my hands for publication with release forms. What this means is there are some photographers across this country representing themselves as Graveyard Girls photographers, but they are not even sending in their material. The only fix for this I see is to do it all myself. I quit the job on Nov 1, so now I have some time.
The next problem I see is lack of participation and divided attention.. We have featured over 40 different girls under the Graveyard Girls flag since 2002, but it is rare that any of them even log into the site. Think about it ladies. If you don't use our forums to talk about things, why should anyone else??? There's also a lot of other sites out there doing similar material. I know you girls want to be seen, but if you're everywhere, none of it is special. You don't need to be on every new site that pops up. This is an increasing problem for us, as it is drawing hits away from what we've been doing since 2002.
The 3rd and final problem is lack of income from this site. This site is no longer paying for itself. I've managed to keep a sinking ship afloat as long as I can, financed by my own wallet. Webhosting does cost. Gear does cost. Traveling to do shoots does cost. We offered t-shirts a few weeks ago on a presale, and sold 2. It costs a lot more than those 2 for just printing, so the shirts were cancelled, and those 2 who purchased got refunds. If you all want to keep this going, I need you to have some interest in the merchandise that pays for it all. I've known nearly all of you to spend more on a single meal than what I had the t-shirts priced at..
I've given this 5 years. For now
I will be waiting to see who is standing with me. The time has come to
sink or swim, and it all depends on the girls here.
